HOW TO MIX PATTERNS & COLOR IN YOUR HOME

POSTED BY SALLY DAILEY: 01/09/2018

To spark excitement, create energy and add dimension while decorating your home… it is necessary to mix color, patterns and images. The key is to also play with the mix of differing sizes, geometric and organic images and shapes.

This first image to the right, or below depending upon your viewing device, makes a sophisticated statement through the effective play in patterns. We start with a neutral beige sofa, a pretty wooden table…and then we burst onto the scene with pillows covered in classic leopard print, and another in colorful tropical floral print and add a splash with a beautiful emerald green pillow trimmed in a rich brocade ribbon. Very chic!

The emerald green thrusts itself into the spotlight and instantly becomes our accent color because it is also reiterated in the leaves on the tropical floral pillow and in the leaves of our gorgeous potted orchid strategically placed on the cocktail table. The green is a shock of color. The organic floral is our largescale pattern thus becoming our artwork on the sofa. The leopard pillow adds a classic richness and authenticity to the entire display. Even the covers of the books laying on the cocktail table, have purposeful integrity in the addition of color they lend to this space.

Beautiful and ageless!

Why is it important to add a mixture of patterns and colors in your home?

This second image uses the same principles as above, yet creates a different exciting statement due to differing proportions than displayed in the first image.

The walls/backdrop become our artwork as they are covered in a large organic print wall covering using equal doses of rich cream and soft black in an illustrative/ artsy design. The contrast of this graphic backdrop adds an informal intelligence to the room. It says someone who colors outside the lines lives here! I know this look isn’t for everyone, however it’s a true show stopper! If you are looking to make a statement I promise this will make a great one!

This graphic wall is now punctuated with a simple, tailored, neutral daybed/bench that adds a spot for the eye to rest from the vibrant backdrop. Don’t get too comfortable, because now we create true excitement by adding a colorful embroidered Otomi printed throw, colorful, bold varying striped pillows of similar colors found in the Otomi printed throw. Finally, our eyes come to land on the gorgeous sunshine yellow and pink cotton candy colored pillows. This entire scheme represents how we love a little salt with our sweets! You eat a candy bar and want salty chips, then you want more candy bar! We enjoy this same “treat” with this playful scheme. IT JUST WORKS…and can be addicting!

As with all things, the delightful finish is created with a balance of correct doses of pattern, color and texture. Any space can become a visual “treat” if handled with creativity and joy! Have fun with your home! USING THESE FUNDAMENTALS-ANYTHING GOES!
